Day Excursions
Camp Evergreen is all about having fun and enjoying nature. Whether you choose to enjoy the onsite attractions or want to tour around the area there are a lot of things to see and do. Shipcove, located at the end of Highlands is the home of sea stacks with a look-out point and a beautiful sandy beach. You may even see a whale in the spring or fall. Crabbes beach in St. David's which is still an active fishing port is like stepping back in time. Colorful fishing shacks and boats are a delight to see. In the spring and summer it comes alive during the peak of the fishing season. Children can also enjoy daily excursions to Nikki's pool for a swim in shallow water or brave the current and swim under the old train trestle bridge which is now part of the TC trail. ATV or Side-by-side can take you into Camp 180 Resource Road for a day of water activities. Enjoy a campfire and a meal on the pond. Hold your food close to you though as the whiskyjacks like to eat out of your hands and the chipmunks are always around to grab a nibble. NCC's Grasses Nature Reserve is located at the headwaters of Robinsons River in southwest Newfoundland, 25 kilometres from Stephenville Crossing. This remote 3,879-acre (1,570-hectare) property is hidden in the Long Range Mountains; the most northerly extension of the Appalachian Mountains in North America. The Grasses is one of the largest projects NCC has ever undertaken in Atlantic Canada. It has been long identified as an area of ecological significance and is named for its extensive natural riverside grasses. As the largest wetland of its type in the province it provides habitat for several rare or uncommon plant species, such as Farwell's water-milfoil. In 2014, NCC conducted a study that confirmed the presence of the provincially threatened Newfoundland marten in the Grasses. Other wildlife using this habitat include the La Poile woodland caribou herd, black bear and a diversity of forest songbirds and waterfowl. The Ride For Ages bus is available at affordable rates for everyone. The Bay St. George South Development Association has operated the Ride for Ages program since April 2014. A 26-passenger bus was purchased and provides transportation for individuals to attend medical and social appointments. Nine communities are currently served including Bay St. George, Heatherton, Highlands, Stephenville, Corner Brook, McKay's, Port aux Basques, Jeffrey's and Robinsons. With support from everyone, the possibilities are endless.
